Grace Period Registration and Voting The Chicago Board of Election Commissioners officially opened "grace period" registration and voting on Wednesday, January 9, 2008, to give Chicagoans who are eligible to vote but not yet registered one last opportunity to participate in the February 5, 2008 Presidential Primary Election.  "Grace period" voting ends Tuesday, January 22, 2008.  To participate in the program, you must go to the Board of Elections Headquarters at 69 W. Washington, 6th floor.  Unlike voters who registered by the January 8 deadline, "grace period" voters must cast their ballot when they register and cannot vote at their polling place of Election Day. You don't need to watch the local news to recognize the record amounts of snow that Chicago has received over the past month. Regardless, it becomes important for residents of the 43rd Ward to obey the signs when parking.  The snow routes are in effect throughout Chicago.  Do not give someone the opportunity to tow your vehicle.
City's casino cash: no big jackpot  Crain's Chicago Business 22 October  Much of the debate around the current proposal has focused on the $1 billion in annual revenue a downtown casino is projected to generate. But in reality, the city's take after paying state taxes, operating costs and debt service would be only about $150 million. That's not enough to fully bail out the cash-strapped city government, which this year is asking for $300 million in new taxes and fees to close budget holes.

Public Safety:
Collaboration between police and you, the community, is the foundation of the Chicago Alternative Policing Strategy (CAPS). Police Superintendent Matt L. Rodriguez has advanced CAPS as a proactive community policing solution.  CAPS brings the police, the community, and other City agencies together to identify and solve neighborhood crime problems, rather than simply react to their symptoms after the fact.  CAPS both leverages the experiences of other cities, and breaks important new ground in meeting the needs of Chicago. Get involved by attending your local CAPS Beat Meeting.  Schedules and more info at How CAPS Works
